Cougs to open season against Texas State
The Washington State Cougars will open its 2022-2023 basketball season against Texas State on November 7 in Pullman, according to CBS Sport’ college basketball insider Jon Rothstein.
The Cougars will look to build off of last year’s 22-15 season that ended with a loss to Texas A&M in the National Invitational Tournament semifinals.
The Cougars have won their last 10 season openers, the last loss being an 89-81 loss to Gonzaga in Spokane.
WSU is coming off a 22-15 season, including going 11-9 in PAC-12 play. It was the first season that the Cougars finished with a record over .500 in conference play since the 2007-2008 season, the same season that saw the team make an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
2021-2022 highlights for the Cougars included three players garnering all-PAC-12 honors, freshman Mouhamed Gueye earning five PAC-12 Freshman of the Week awards, winning four of their last five games in the PAC-12 and making a deep run in the NIT.
The Texas State Bobcats finished the 2021-2022 season with a 21-8 record and an appearance in the NIT. Their season ended with a loss to No. 2 seed North Texas in the first round of the NIT. The Bobcats have not had a losing season since 2017-2018.
A full schedule for the Cougars has not been released yet. Schedules are typically finalized in August.
