LOS ANGELES – Three more Zags were drafted in the 2022 MLB Draft, giving Gonzaga four total players selected in this year’s draft.

Right-handers Trystan Vrieling (No. 100 overall) and Will Kempner (No. 106 overall) were drafted by the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants respectively in the third round, followed by reliever Brody Jessee being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th round at No. 303 overall.

Vrieling, a two-time West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week winner, earned a spot on the 2022 second team all-conference list after finishing inside the top 40 in the nation with 107 strikeouts. The six-foot-four pitcher started 15 games for the Zags in 2022, and had the second-most innings pitched (80.2).

Kempner missed part of the regular season with a back injury, but held opponents scoreless in four appearances (17.1 innings) upon his return. He also earned a WCC Pitcher of the Week award, and had a 3.0 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 36 innings pitched.

Jessee went 4-3 in games, striking out 48 batters in 35.1 innings over 18 appearances.

Four players drafted is the most for Gonzaga since 2016 when six Zags were recruited to pro ball.
