PHILADELPHIA — The Maxwell Football Club announced its 2022 Maxwell Award Watch List on Monday, with Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward being one of the 86 players named to the list.

The last Cougar to be named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which is given annually to the most outstanding player in college football, was running back Max Borghi prior to the 2020 season.

Ward transferred to Pullman from Incarnate Word in Texas during the offseason after two record-setting years with the Cardinals. In just six games during his freshman 2020 season, he threw for over 2,200 yards and 24 touchdowns, both of which were school records, and won the Jerry Rice Award in the process.

In 2021, Ward backed up his performance by throwing for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns, good enough for a spot on the second-team All-American list, the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and finalist for the Walter Payton Award. The Cardinals finished with a 10-3 record and made it to the second round of the FCS playoffs.

Ward left Incarnate Word with program-bests in both passing yards (6,908) and touchdowns (71). Eric Morris, Ward’s head coach during his time at UIW, is now Washington State’s offensive coordinator.
