A pedestrian – who died early Thursday morning when she was struck by a car on Interstate 90, east of George – was identified Saturday as Christina M. Schmelling, 44, of Moses Lake, by the Washington State Patrol.

Schmelling apparently was standing in the road just before 12:11 a.m. Thursday when she was struck by a blue 2019 Subaru Ascent, driven by Leila R. Hepp, 43, of Granite Falls.

Schmelling died at the scene. Hepp was uninjured and was wearing a seat belt. The vehicle was totaled.

The cause of the collision was a pedestrian in the road, according to the WSP.
