October 18, 1941 – January 12, 2022

Charles Leroy Selfridge, 80, of Warden, Washington, passed away from Alzheimer’s Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at home with family by his side.

Charles was born the youngest of eight children in Lansing, Michigan, Oct. 18, 1941, to Alton and Laura Selfridge. He moved to Warden in 1948 at the age of 7 to start an auto repair business with his family. Even at a young age he was a hard worker, helping his dad in the auto shop. He loved to stay busy and went on to become an auto mechanic after graduating in 1960. This was an eventful year for Chuck, as it also marks the year of his marriage to high school sweetheart, Lola Marshall. He continued to work for a dryland farmer as a mechanic for the first years of marriage.

August 1964 was the happiest month of his life, when his beautiful daughter, Lori, was born. He left farming to work at Country Garden and later went to Othello to work as a supervisor. In 1972, Chuck worked alongside his brother-in-law Phil Tucker at Phil’s Automotive as a mechanic until a neck and back injury in 1984. After his injury, his lifelong mission was supporting his wife and daughter in everything from ceramics to building decks and zen gardens, to teaching sports, fishing and life skills to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would give his all to any task put in front of him and loved problem solving and making dreams come true for his little family. He could be heard saying, “I don’t need anything, I’ve got it all. A wife and daughter and my grandkids, all close by to enjoy.”

Chuck enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping, traveling, playing cards and spending time with family, friends, grandkids, and great-grandkids. In high school, he excelled in sports and was an all around athlete in football, baseball and basketball, earning him a trophy of excellence.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife Lola of 61 years; daughter Lori and son-in-law John of Warden; and five grandchildren: Chris (Yvonne) of Moses Lake, Traci (Adam) of Hillsboro, Oregon, Stefanie (Nic) of Moses Lake, John (Carlyn) of Tenino, Washington and Laura (Chris) of Hayden Lake, Idaho; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law Vera Selfridge of Kennewick, Washington, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Laura and Alton Selfridge and siblings J.D. (Betty), Leo, Russ, Frank (Dori), Azula (Durwood), Cora (Dave) and Delores.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories.
