MLHS swim team shuts out Eastmont; Quincy keeps up
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake High School boys swim and dive team members came out on top in every event during a home meet against Eastmont High School on Thursday.
MLHS topped the team scores, too, with a whopping 138 points compared to Eastmont’s 41 points.
The meet was also senior night for MLHS. The team only had three seniors this year: Issac Patten, Kade Pack and Ryker Ohs.
Quincy High School (QHS) was also represented at the meet because the QHS athletes practice and swim with the Eastmont team. The QHS athletes are considered a separate team; however, since they attend a different high school, in a different size classification, and their school does not offer a swim program. Because of this situation, all events the QHS boys swam in at the Moses Lake meet were timed, but not counted toward a team score.
The QHS team was a tough contender, and had it qualified for scoring, several athletes would have taken first place.
The QHS 200-yard medley relay team, made up of senior Wyatt Van der Merwe, junior Rami Escure, junior Trenten Calloway and sophomore Quinn Escure, finished with a time of one minute, 49.32 seconds, nearly five seconds faster than MLHS’s team, which took first.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Calloway, Van der Merwe and Rami Escure would have taken the top three spots with times 50.45 seconds, 51.53 and 51.71, respectively.
In the 100-yard backstroke, again Calloway and Rami Escure would have taken the top two spots with times of 58.69 and 59.81 seconds, respectively. Van der Merwe tied with MLHS junior Nicholas Moore, who took first with a time of one minute, 2.66 seconds.
