FEDERAL WAY — The Moses Lake and Quincy high schools swim and dive teams participated in the state meet at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way Feb. 17-19.

Moses Lake High School participated in the 4A category and took 18th as a team.

As the competitors worked their way through the meet, Moses Lake was hoping to make eighth or better in the preliminaries to secure a top-eight spot in the finals in order to make the top bracket in the tournament, said Chiefs head coach Lindy Tracey.

The only event in which they did place top eight was the 200-yard freestyle relay. However, it was earned through extra hard work as there was a tie between Moses Lake and another school for ninth and 10th place in the preliminaries as well as a possible time error for eighth place in the same race.

In cases where there is a tie, there is a swim-off, essentially a redo of the race with just the athletes or teams that are tying. This resulted in a swim-off for the three teams, Moses Lake, Olympia and Skyline, in the 200-yard freestyle relay. This was Moses Lake’s second chance to make the top eight heat for finals.

In an exciting, by only inches, victory, Moses Lake beat both teams in the swim-off to take eighth in the preliminaries and then eighth again at finals the next day.

• 2nd in the 50-yard freestyle adaptive by sophomore Danny Thurman
