Local teams battle for titles and tickets to state competition

COLUMBIA BASIN — As basketball teams move into the postseason and compete for their chance at district titles and a ticket to the state tournament, Columbia Basin hoops fanatics have had a diverse season to watch.

Warden girls are undefeated this year, 21-0, and will play Mabton High School on Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. at River View High School for the district championship. Both winner and loser will move on to regionals.

Warden High School boys did not make it to the district tournament. Their season record was 3-18.

Moses Lake High School girls were automatically seeded to the second round of the district tournament. They play at 6 p.m. on Feb. 18 against Eisenhower High School at Eisenhower. Winner moves on to regionals while the loser will play in a loser-out-winner-to-regionals game scheduled for Feb. 19.

Moses Lake High School boys took on Wenatchee High School in the first round of districts Feb. 16. Moses Lake lost 55-41, ending their season with a 8-12 overall record. Wenatchee will move on to round two of the district competition.

Quincy High School boys won all their games in the district tournament, taking the District 6 1A title. They move on to the District 6/7 crossover game, which is set for Feb. 19. The Jacks will take on Colville Senior High School. Winner of the crossover advances to districts while the loser is out.

Quincy High School girls lost to Chelan High School in the district tournament, 19-42, ending their season. The Lady Jacks had an overall season record of 6-15.

Wahluke High School boys beat Wapato High School in the first round of districts 62-60, then fell to Zillah High School 74-63. Wahluke had a second chance and will play Connell High School Feb. 17 at Toppenish High School. Results were not available by press time. Wahluke has a 10-8 overall record this season.

Wahluke girls were not selected for the district competition. They ended their season with a 1-17 overall record.

Soap Lake High School boys beat out Pateros and Riverside Christian to play in the District Championship against Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School on Feb. 17. Results were not available by press time. Winner will move on to regionals while the loser will have a second shot to make it to regionals by beating either Entiat or Riverside Christian in the district second place bracket game. Soap Lake has a 14-5 overall record so far this season. MLCA/CCS has a 20-2 overall record after beating Cascade Christian and Entiat in the district tournament.

Soap Lake High School girls fell to Entiat in the first round of districts 41-52, concluding their season with an overall record of 4-14.

MLCA/CCS girls were automatically seeded to the second round of districts where they beat Entiat 60-14. MLCA/CCS played Waterville-Mansfield on Feb. 17 for the district title. Results were not available by press time. Winner of the district title moves on to regionals while the loser has a second shot at regionals by beating the winner of the Entiat versus Pateros game. MLCA/CCS beat Waterville-Mansfield earlier in the season in the final seconds of the game to take the league title.

Royal High School girls lost to Wapato High School 54-85 in the first round. They went on in their second chance to beat Naches Valley 64-60. They next played Toppenish High School on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. Results were not available by press time. Winner would move on to the final round where the winner will go to regionals and the loser is out.

Royal High School boys beat Naches Valley 81-50 and then lost to Toppenish 55-66. They played Wapato Feb. 17 to move on to the final round where the winner will go to regionals and the loser is out. Their season record is 14-6.

Othello High School girls beat Ephrata High School girls in the first round of the district tournament, 62-35 on Feb. 8. Othello then went on to fall to Prosser High School on Feb. 10, 52-59.

Ephrata and Othello each had second chances in the competition on Feb. 14. Ephrata fell to Grandview High School 36-60, ending their season with a 4-18 record. Othello however beat East Valley High School 41-25 and then Grandview 52-37. Othello next plays Prosser Feb. 18 at Prosser. The winner moves on to regionals and the loser has their season come to an end. Othello’s current record is 15-8.

Ephrata High School boys lost to Prosser in the first round of districts 53-70. They lost in their second chance against East Valley 62-63. The boys ended their season with an overall record of 7-16.

Othello High School boys did not make it to the district tournament. Their season record was 4-14.

Wilson Creek boys lost in the first round of districts to Entiat, 42-51. They did not get a second chance in the tournament and ended their season with a 5-12 overall record.

The Wilson Creek girls also fell in the first round of districts to Pateros 64-20. Their season record was 2-12.
