OTHELLO — The Othello High School girls wrestling team brought home the team title from the North Girls Sub-Regional tournament Saturday in Spangle.

The Lady Huskies scored 228.5 points to take the title. Quincy finished second with 127 points and Moses Lake was third with 113 points. Royal took fourth with 108 points.

“The girls had an unbelievable performance,” coach Rafael Ruiz wrote in an email. “The majority of the girls are beginners and they were determined to win. They know it’s postseason and anything is possible. They truly believe in themselves as much as we believe in them.”

Elia Velazquez took home the sub-district title in the 190-pound class. Lexi Monday, 115 pounds, and Hazel Gonzalez, 125 pounds, each placed second, and Aaliya Gomez, 155 pounds, and Thalia Gallegos, 170 pounds, each placed third.

“We are extremely happy with how they wrestled,” Ruiz wrote.

The top five wrestlers in each weight class advance to the regional tournament Feb. 12 in Ephrata, where they meet wrestlers in the South Girls Sub-Regional tournament. The top five finishers in regional competition advance to the state championships scheduled for Feb. 18 and 19 in Tacoma.
