WA fire marshal advises preparedness for winter storms
OLYMPIA — The Washington State Fire Marshal’s office is asking Washington residents to take precautions and prepare for winter weather emergencies such as wind-driven snow, extreme cold, downed power lines and icy roads.
“Winter storms and extreme cold can cause dangerous and life-threatening conditions,” said a press release from Deputy Fire Marshal Gregory Baruso. “Taking preparedness actions now can make a big difference in protecting you and your family.”
In the short term, the State Fire Marshal is advising residents to stay informed of winter weather, particularly oncoming storms and forecast extremes, know how to shut off their main water valve in case a pipe bursts, have supplies on hand for several days of being at home without power or in your car in case you are ever stuck on the road, and avoid using carbon monoxide-producing appliances like camping stoves and lanterns indoors.
For longer-term preparedness, residents should ensure their homes, including water pipes, are adequately insulated and have an ample supply of firewood on hand for a fireplace or wood heating stove.
