DOH encourages caution in light of dangerous flu season
OLYMPIA — With this winter's flu season spreading faster and causing more death than in previous years, the Washington State Department of Health is advising all state residents aged 6 months and older get their flu shots as soon as possible, according to a department press release.
DOH described this year’s flu season as arriving earlier than in previous years, noting that 40 people so far have died from this year’s H3N2 Influenza A strain — including three children.
“It’s not too late to get your flu shot, so we urge everyone aged 6 months and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible,” said Secretary of Health Umair Shah in the press release. “Flu is spreading rapidly through our state and getting your flu shot now helps to protect us all, especially as we plan to gather for holidays and events.”
The vaccine is available at most pharmacies, physicians’ offices and clinics, the press release noted, and reduces the possibility of severe disease and the likelihood of needing hospitalization.
In addition, the DOH is advising all Washington residents to get up to date on other vaccines and boosters, including against COVID-19, wash their hands frequently with soap and water, consider wearing a mask when indoors or in a crowded setting, sneezing or coughing into the crook of their arm, and avoiding close contact with those who are sick, the press release said.
