QUINCY — The Quincy Jacks girls basketball team defeated the Wahluke Warriors 47-32 in the season opener for both teams Friday at Quincy High School

Micaiah McCreary, Quincy head coach, said she saw some improvement between the team’s first time on the court earlier in the week.

“I thought we were hustling a lot better. We had a jamboree on Monday and it was - not good. They threw that away, and they came out ready to play,” she said.

First-year Wahluke Coach Everardo Corrales said he was pleased with his team’s effort in the first game.

“I like the intensity they put on defense,” he said.

“I told the girls not to hang their heads,” Corrales said. “This is only the beginning. We can only improve from here.”

Quincy never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 7-3 lead early in the first quarter and increasing that to 22-12 early in the second quarter. Quincy led 24-14 at the half.

Both coaches said there was some raggedy play, with missed free throws and missed shots. The first basket of the second half took about two minutes, and Quincy’s first basket didn’t come until halfway through the quarter. The Warriors cut the lead to 8, but a run by Quincy pushed the lead to 42-23 early in the fourth quarter.

Both coaches said the game showed some of their team’s strengths and some areas where they needed work.

“I thought we went out and executed our game plan fairly well,” McCreary said. “We were really pushing the ball; that’s what we wanted to do today. I thought we did a fairly good job of attacking the rim.”

Corrales said his team is learning how to use their defensive skills to their advantage.

“My philosophy is, I’m a defensive-minded coach,” he said. “So I look to make the stops on defense. The offense will slowly come around.”

McCreary said the Jacks need to work on their rebounding, however.

“We’re vertically challenged, so we’ve really got to get in there and box out if we want to win any kind of rebounding game,” she said.

Corrales said his team needs to work on their offensive game.

“I think our offense is struggling a little bit right now because we’re trying to find ourselves,” he said. “The girls are trying to find where they fit into the offense, and I think that’s where our main struggle is right now.”

Quincy opens league play against Chelan Tuesday at Chelan High School. Wahluke will host White Swan in a non-league game Tuesday at Wahluke High School.
