Household hazardous waste collection set for Sept. 17
EPHRATA — Residents of Grant County can dispose of household hazardous waste for free on Sept. 17 through an event put on by Grant County and the Department of Ecology.
According to a release by Grant County Solid Waste, the event is for waste generated by households only.
The release also states for participants to remain in their vehicles and all waste must be in the trunk or the bed of a pickup. Products should be brought in original labeled containers if possible and packed to prevent spills during transportation. Containers will not be returned.
Hazardous products have labels with words such as danger, caustic, flammable and poison, the release states.
Items accepted include: pil-based and latex paint, automotive oil, paint thinner, rechargeable batteries, solvents, brake fluid, aerosols, spot removers, drain openers, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, mercury-containing devices such as thermostats and thermometers, swimming pool chemicals and hobby chemicals.
Lights are accepted but are limited. Residents and businesses may bring a maximum of 10 mercury-containing lights per person to the event. Fluorescent light tubes, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and high-intensity discharge lights (HIDs) are accepted. Lights should not be taped together.
Items not accepted include: propane tanks, used automotive batteries, empty containers, agricultural waste, commercial waste, explosives, ammunition, asbestos, radioactive material, cylinders, poison A gasses, refrigerant compressors, leaking containers and containers larger than five gallons.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grant County Public Works complex at 124 Enterprise St. SE, Ephrata. For more information, call Grant County Solid Waste at 754-6082, ext. 3508.
