Moses Lake Roundup closes out for 2022

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Roundup, an annual rodeo event held at the Grant County Fairgrounds, wrapped up on Saturday with winners named in eight competitions.

“I think it was great this year,” Roundup Volunteer Corbett Kolst said. “I love it every year. For the most part, I think everything went real smooth and the atmosphere was great.”

The three-night event hosted eight different events, bringing out riders from across the United States and as far as Australia and Brazil.

Thursday and Friday nights had themes, with riders and workers wearing pink shirts for breast cancer awareness on Thursday and Patriot Night hosted on Friday - which honored veterans and active duty members of the military.

The competition began Thursday, opening with a pre-show that had mutton busting and other warm-up events. The mutton busting featured children ages 4-7 and under 60 pounds riding sheep, attempting to stay on as long as possible. Once pre-show festivities wrapped up, the rodeo events began with bareback riding.

“There’s something special about the (Moses Lake Roundup),” Kolst said.

Following bareback riding was steer wrestling, team roping and the saddle bronc. Each event had numerous competitors each night attempting to finish their respective events in the money, with several thousands of dollars on the line.

“Progressively, over the years, the sport of rodeo has been gaining more and more interest in our community,” spectator Brady Coker said. “This was some of the best three days that I’ve seen in the past few years.”

The first four events were followed up by a performance by Rider Kiesner, a trick roper from Oklahoma whose performance featured fire stunts and whips. Kiesner also served as rodeo clown during the three nights of the Moses Lake Roundup, interacting with the crowd in humorous ways.

“It’s great to have such a great sport and production in our hometown,” Coker said.

After the halftime-esque performance by Kiesner, the rodeo continued on with women’s breakaway roping, tie down roping, barrel racing and bull riding.

“It’s a big Northwest run in our circuit,” said Reid Oftedahl, a bull rider from Minnesota of why he came out to Moses Lake. “There’s a lot of rodeos out here. Good rodeos. Good money here in Moses Lake.”

With the competition ending Saturday night, the winners of the 2022 Moses Lake Roundup were finalized. Tilden Hooper won the bareback riding event with a score of 86.5; Bryton Edmundson won the steer wrestling event in a time of 3.5 seconds; the team of Egusquiza/Graves won the team roping event with a time of 4.1 seconds; Dawson Hay won the saddle bronc event with a score of 87 points; Macy Young won the women’s breakaway roping event with a time of 2.2 seconds; Kincade Henry won the tie down roping event with a time of 7.9 seconds; Cheyenne Wimberley and Taycie Matthews tied for first in barrel racing with times of 17.21 seconds; Jared Parsonage won the bull riding event with a score of 87.5 points.

During Thursday and Saturday’s competitions, a handful of riders and participants sustained injuries as a result of rodeo incidents. On Thursday, a man involved with the Moses Lake Roundup was hit by a bull, and he was taken out by an ambulance. On Saturday, a rider bearing sponsorship flags fell off her horse and was also taken out by an ambulance. Announcements were made on Saturday that the man had broken ribs and the woman was to be flown to Spokane.

An ambulance entered the arena again later on Saturday evening for a rider during the bull riding competition, however, the rider refused medical assistance and walked out of the arena.

There’s one thing that makes the risks worth it for the competitors though, Oftedahl said.

“The fans,” Hel said. “When we first rolled in, we walked up there and saw that it was packed. There's nothing better for us as contestants to show up to a rodeo and have a lot of fans there. It makes it fun for us.”
