MOSES LAKE – The 2022 Moses Lake Roundup kicked off on Thursday night at the Grant County Fairgrounds, bringing in competitors from around the country.

The rodeo began with a pre-show that consisted of 4H riders making their way around the course, as well as a mutton-busting event for young riders.

The theme of the evening was cancer awareness, with riders and volunteers donning pink-colored shirts and accessories. Shortly before the rodeo began, a memorial service was held for those who had passed away from cancer, releasing white doves to honor them.

The rodeo began with bareback riding, with contestants exiting the pen atop a bucking horse, and attempting to stay on for eight seconds. Bull Tutor won the bareback riding competition with a score of 74.

The third event on Thursday night was team roping, where a team of two riders work together to catch a steer in the fastest time possible. The timed event was won by the team of Stanley/Campbell with a time of 16.5 seconds.

The saddle bronc event hit the arena afterward, an event with similar scoring to bareback riding. Dawson Hay’s score of 87 gave him the win.

Shayla Currin’s time of 2.5 seconds gave her the win in the women’s breakaway roping event, an event that shares common ground with tie-down roping.

In the tie-down roping event, John Douch made quick work of his run, completing it in 8.3 seconds for the win.

Leslie Smalygo earned the win in the barrel racing event, where riders navigate through a course of barrels in the arena. She had a time of 17.3 seconds.

In the final event, Caleb McMillan left the arena with a win in the bull riding event. He earned a score of 83, half a point above second place.
