ELLENSBURG — The Othello boys soccer team took a 3-0 victory over conference opponent Ellensburg High School on April 19.

“Our defense did not allow very many shots on goal as junior Erick Sandoval made zero saves in the first half at goal and Freshman Ismael Torres had four saves in the second half for the shutout,” Othello Head Coach Bernie Garza wrote in an email to The Columbia Basin Herald.

The victory over Ellensburg improved the Huskies’ record to 9-1 in league and 11-2-1 overall.

According to an email from Garza, Othello dominated the possession. He wrote that they scored two goals in the first half and the defense led by senior Alonzo Cruz, junior Brandon Garza, senior Isacc Rodriguez and sophomore Jesus Bonilla shutout Ellensburg all game long.

The two first-half goals by Othello were scored by Senior Anthony Ontiveros and Sophomore Alex Mendez.

Garza wrote that Ontiveros’ goal was scored from 30 yards out and assisted by sophomore Christian Torres “on a rocket of a shot.”

“One of the most outstanding goals scored all year,” Garza wrote.

Mendez’s second goal for the team was assisted by freshman Jose Cabrera to lead 2-0 at half.

In the second half, Cabrera scored his 13th goal of the season, and the third and final goal for the Huskies that match, on an assist by Ontiveros.

Cabrera leads the Central Washington Athletic Conference in goals this season.

“Offense was very aggressive right off the start and our midfielders maintained possession all game long and the defense was solid as always,” Garza said via email.

Next up for the Huskies is East Valley (Yakima) on Saturday at home. Garza wrote that the winner of the game will most likely be the league champion and hold the number seed into the district playoffs. It is also senior night for 10 Othello seniors.

“Othello players are excited to prove what they are capable of doing,” wrote Garza.
