WIAA updates RPI standings - Basin schools ranked in top 10
COLUMBIA BASIN — The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association updated their Rating Percentage Index standings via Facebook on April 19. Nine Columbia Basin teams have made the top 10.
The Rating Percentage Index is a statistical system used to comparatively rank teams. RPI will be one tool utilized by the seeding committees to determine first round bracket pairings into state tournaments.
The following Columbia Basin teams are ranked top 10 in the state through the RPI system for each classification and sport:
- 4A Baseball - Moses Lake High School No. 6
- 2A Baseball - Ephrata No. 2
- 2A Fastpitch - Othello No. 4
- 2A Soccer - Othello No. 7
- 1A Fastpitch - Royal No. 6
- 1A Soccer - Wahluke No. 7
- 2B Fastpitch - Warden No. 9
- 1B Baseball - ACH No.1
- 1B Fastpitch - ACH No.1
The formula used to calculate RPI is as follows:
RPI = (40% x Winning Percentage) + (40% x Opponents' Winning Percentage) + (20% x Opponents’ Opponents' Winning Percentage)
According to the WIAA website, “The RPI system will be an accurate reflection of all regular and postseason games. Teams will be seeded into the state brackets based on their final ranking as determined by the seeding committees versus previous criteria that was based on how teams finished in the District qualifying tournaments.”
