Ephrata SD looks to hire girls wrestling coach

EPHRATA - Ephrata High School announced in a press release on April 7 that they are looking for their school’s first girls wrestling coach.

The release states that Ephrata High School is seeing a rising number of young women turning out for its wrestling program. To meet the growing demand, the Ephrata School District is searching for its first varsity head coach for its girls wrestling program.

The boys varsity wrestling coach has managed both boys and girls teams until now. Separate coaching staff will enable the boys and girls teams to practice independently, allowing for growth in both programs, the release stated.

“EHS saw our first female wrestlers try out about 10 years ago,” said Bryan Johnson, Ephrata High School Athletic Director. “What started as one or two girls on the team has grown to 10 or 12 wrestlers turning out the last few years. It’s an exciting expansion of our boys program and one that needs to be recognized for its own merits with its own head coach. We can’t wait to see what our girls program can do with its own, dedicated staff.”

During the 2021-2022 season, four EHS girls wrestlers made it to the WIAA State Championships in Tacoma. Two of those four placed in the top eight for their weight class.

Those two were senior Marysol Flores who took 2nd place in the girls 100-pound weight class and sophomore Kadie Mcmullen who took 8th place in the girls 140-pound weight class.

“Ephrata has a long legacy of excellence in its wrestling program,” said Johnson. “We’re looking for exciting and dynamic leaders to help us build on our success and build positive relationships with our student-athletes.”
