COULEE CITY — Students at Almira/Coulee-Hartline High School got an early start on their spring break Friday when the school was closed due to a bomb threat that turned out to be a hoax.

The threat was phoned in about 12:20 p.m., according to Grant County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kyle Foreman. The caller ID indicated that the call had come from Tennessee, but the number proved to be spoofed, meaning the actual origin of the call couldn't be traced.

GCSO deputies and firefighters walked through the school and determined that the threat was a hoax, Foreman said. The district closed early and students were sent home.

Spoofing numbers isn't unusual, Foreman said.

"We've gotten several spoofed calls over the years," he said. "It's the modern equivalent of the crank phone call."
