Letter: School name should reflect community

| September 16, 2021 1:00 AM

What is the school board thinking of, coming up with these names for our new high school? Ronald Reagan Academy, Renaissance Academy, Vanguard Academy, Sinkiuse Academy, Sinkiuse Innovation Academy.

None of these five names has anything to do with Moses Lake or our community. The name should represent the community.

I think the residents of Moses Lake should have the chance to name the new high school.

Has the school board looked up the word “academy” and what it means? These are some of the things the dictionary has to say: 1. Private high school. 2. Society of scholars or artists. 3. Private secondary school. 4. School offering training in a special field. 5. Association of scholars, writers, et cetera for advancing an art or science. 6. Academies of medicine and painting and military and naval academies.

The first thing I think of when I hear the word “academy” is a private school. The high school is going to be a public school, not a private school.

I also think the board should look up the words “renaissance” and “vanguard.” These words have nothing to do with out school or our community.

Give the people of Moses Lake a chance to name their new high school and give their school a name they can be proud to call their new high school.
