MATTAWA — An afternoon wildfire burned about 75 acres two miles north of Mattawa Sunday.

Grant County Fire District 8 Chief Joe Noonchester said the fire was about five miles north of Mattawa on Saddle Mountain Drive and was reported about 1:30 p.m.

The fire was burning in steep terrain, he said, at a time when the winds were gusting to about 10 to 15 mph.

“It was moving pretty fast,” Noonchester said.

About 20 to 25 firefighters from a number of agencies responded, he said. The firefighters requested and got air support. No injuries were reported.

Grant County Fire District 8 crews were on scene until about 5 p.m. Monday, said district business manager Barbara Davis.

Noonchester said the cause is still under investigation.
