Memorial Day events scheduled around Grant, Adams counties
MOSES LAKE — The sacrifices of the men and women who fought to keep America free will be recognized with services at some local cemeteries Monday.
American flags will be out at Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens on East Cemetery Street at 6 a.m., and “Taps” will be played at noon. There won’t be a ceremony in 2021, said Roger Schell, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8889.
The playing of “Taps” will follow at the Adams Cemetery at the intersection of state Route 17 and West Sutton Road.
The American Legion Post 28 auxiliary in Ephrata will be part of the remembrances at the Ephrata, Quincy and Soap Lake cemeteries.
“Each ceremony is a little different, with flag raising and lowering, speakers, color guard, firing squad (salute) and the playing of ‘Taps,’” wrote Jane Montaney of Post 28.
Ceremonies are scheduled for 10 a.m. at Valley View Memorial Park, 20174 Road A NE, in Soap Lake.
The service at the Ephrata Cemetery is scheduled for 11 a.m. The cemetery is located at the intersection of E Street Southwest and Third Avenue Southwest.
Montaney said American Legion members, students and parents from St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and participants from Boy Scout Troop 41 will place small American flags and white crosses at veterans’ graves at the Ephrata Cemetery.
The Memorial Day ceremony at the Quincy Valley Cemetery will be at 12:30 p.m. The cemetery is located at the intersection of state Route 28 and Seventh Avenue Southwest.
Remembrances will be conducted at the Forgotten Heroes Memorial at the Port of Moses Lake at 11 a.m. The memorial commemorates servicemen killed in a 1952 air crash at what was then Larson Air Force Base.
Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. at Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Moses Lake, 14403 Road 2 NE. Owner Susan Freeman said the services will include speakers and a bagpiper.
