Letter: There are better namesakes for new high school

| May 27, 2021 1:00 AM

I was surprised to read that Elliott Goodrich wants to name our new high school “Ronald Reagan.” What did Reagan have to do with Moses Lake?

There are a lot of people in Moses Lake who have given a lot of their time and themselves to the community of Moses Lake and the state of Washington, like Tub Hansen, Harold Hochstatter, Monte Holm and a lot more. They are some of our town’s pioneers.

The name of our school should have something to do with Moses Lake and our own pioneers and what Moses Lake is all about.

Moses Lake used to be named Neppel, then it was changed to Moses Lake because of the lake and Chief Moses who wintered here. Maybe we should name the new high school “Neppel High School,” or something to do with the pioneers.

Why should the school board be the ones to name our schools? I think that our community should have a chance to name our schools. Why has the naming committee not asked the Moses Lake community to help if they are having a hard time coming up with a name for the new high school?

“Reagan” is not a name for our new school.
