Letter: No service this year, but flags will still fly

| May 20, 2021 1:00 AM

This Memorial Day weekend, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8889 will meet at Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens in Othello at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 30, to clean the flag poles and memorial. The poles will then be laid out for Memorial Day.

The flags will be put up at 6 a.m. Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.

We will not hold a memorial service this year. At noon, taps will be played and the flag raised to full staff. Shortly after that, taps will be played at the Adams Cemetery on Highway 17 and that flag raised to full staff.

The flags at Bess Hampton will come down at 6 p.m. Memorial Day.

We welcome our volunteers again this year. The veterans of the Othello post are so grateful for your help.

If you have thought about helping but weren’t sure if you could, let me say that it is our volunteers who make this happen. Our volunteers consist of family members of veterans, friends and those who want to be part of the Memorial Day remembrance.

Roger Schell,

Commander, VFW Post 8889
