MATTAWA — Port of Mattawa officials have added a new tenant at the port’s industrial park: Waste Management will have a storage yard for its equipment and receptacles.

Port director Lars Leland said Waste Management won’t construct a building at the Road 24 Southwest location. Rather, the property will be used to store trucks, equipment and waste receptacles. Port officials will install a chain link fence around the property.

Leleand said the property won’t be used to store solid waste, either, and drive-up garbage disposal will not be allowed.

Waste Management has been providing garbage removal services in the Mattawa area for a number of years. Currently, the trucks working in the Mattawa area come from Ellensburg.

“They have to drive back and forth every day,” Leland said.

The new storage yard will allow the company to store equipment in Mattawa, saving money, and possibly generating some new jobs in the Mattawa area, Leland added
