By moms, for moms: Basin businesses start unique Mother’s Day traditions
MOSES LAKE — For many, Mother’s Day fires images of flower ensembles and large breakfasts, a staple of business’ traditions across the nation.
The event was made a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. The celebration, originally involving white carnations and intimate family settings, has evolved to mean anything as diverse as the moms who celebrate.
Columbia Basin businesses have developed their own traditions in the form of animal adoption events, craft sales, church events and more.
Friday before Mother’s Day, for example, Body Benefitz at 226 W. Third Ave. in Moses Lake, offered limited-sized therapeutic massage sessions for moms.
Saturday, adventurous moms took to the Moses Lake Sand Dunes for a Mother’s Day Fun Run in the Dunes: Let Mom Drive, put on by the Sand Scorpions ORV Group, whipping their rigs through 3,000 acres of terrain.
Sunday morning, moms and their kids came together at The O2 Studio Moses Lake, 220 W. Third Ave., for mimosas and a light brunch of fruits and snacks.
“Who doesn’t like mimosas for brunch?” asked owner Kiley Carey.
The Mothers & Mimosas event was an hour-and-a-half flow-yoga escape for mothers, “but also dog moms or cat moms, whatever kind of mom you are, it’s welcoming,” she said.
Flow yoga is a series of postures, moving from one to another seamlessly with breath. It helps increase balance and prevent injuries, she said.
Leading the class, Carey focused on the hips and the heart, she said, places where mothers especially hold stress and tension.
Mostly, she said, it’s a time to relax with like-minded moms.
“I’m a mom myself of a 2-year-old, so it’s an escape for me, too,” she said.
