Just after 7 p.m. Saturday, Grant County Fire District 7 responded to a 30-plus-acre wildfire near Lake Lenore, off state Route 17.

While the cause is still under investigation, a witness saw people in the area with guns right before the fire, said District 7 Chief Kirk Sheppard.

“It’s definitely man made because there aren’t power lines or nothing out there,” Sheppard said. “It’s in the middle of nowhere.”

Ephrata Fire Department and Grant County Fire District 13 assisted, with around 40 total firefighters. Located off a steep cliff and with high winds, the blaze took around three and a half hours to get under control.

“Between the three agencies, I think they did a phenomenal job,” Sheppard said.
