Basin Bites: Blue Palm shop serves a healthy frozen treat

Inside a small strip mall off Stratford Road in Moses Lake sits a little gem of a shop if you’re looking for a quick, sweet, frozen, creamy treat. A stop inside could be a great retreat, especially with the weather warming up.

Blue Palm Frozen Yogurt, the only frozen yogurt shop I have seen in town, offers 10 different flavors, if its yogurt machines are all running, including non-dairy and sugar-free. It also often has gelato and custard-type treats, as well as more than 60 toppings.

These are some of the reasons I enjoy this shop at 1035 N. Stratford Road, Suite D, and why I’m kicking off this food column with it.

I’ve been a frequent flyer to frozen yogurt establishments for many years and particularly love self-serve options. I also enjoy the brand YoCream, which is served at the only Blue Palm locations – Moses Lake and Walla Walla.

The yogurt is typically self-serve, but due to COVID-19, the shop converted to having the staff serve your pick of yogurts and toppings. However, the cup is still weighed, and you’re charged accordingly.

One might say you could get a cheaper “ice cream” fix at another establishment, but it’s not the same. The health benefits of yogurt outweigh ice cream, as it has live, active cultures that help digestion. It also tends to be low-fat, non-fat, or even sugar-free, if you’re watching your diet, and you can give yourself as much as you want, whereas other places often give you a one-size-fits-all portion.

This is one of many great desserts in the Columbia Basin, and I’ll be writing about more, as well as main dishes.

I’d love your feedback, too. To give me an idea for an upcoming column, email ethornton@columbiabasin.com.
