Leona Frazier

| June 24, 2021 1:00 AM

June 17, 1929 – May 10, 2021

Leona Judith (Hewitt) Frazier was born in Polson, Montana, on June 17, 1929, to John and Ella Hewitt. She passed to her heavenly glory at home on May 10, 2021, at the age of 91, with her daughter and son attending at her side. She attended schools in Polson, graduating in 1947.

Leona took piano and violin lessons for several years and played drums in the high school band. However, she preferred singing, which led her to directing choirs for the Lutheran church in every town in which they lived: Polson, Somers and Whitefish, Montana; Portland, Oregon and Moses Lake, Washington.

Leona was married to William Hubert (Hugh) Frazier on May 14, 1948. They had a son, Gary Lee, on April 10, 1949, and a daughter, Wendy Jeannine on June 29, 1951.

Joining her on the farm was one older sister, Myrtus, and two younger sisters, Delphia and Gayle. The four girls liked to sing together in four-part harmony and were a wonderful highlight of any extended family gathering.

Leona loved to sing solos and pleased all who heard her. After retiring from directing in Moses Lake, she sang in the choir until she was 83.

When she and Hugh moved to Moses Lake in 1962, they purchased Basin Propane. Leona was the office manager and bookkeeper until they sold to Northern Energy. She was called back to work in 1990 after the current office manager was in a serious car accident and she worked five more years before retiring again.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Myrtus. She is survived by her son Gary Frazier of Moses Lake, Washington, her daughter Wendy and husband Gene Schmidt of Farmington, New Mexico, two grandsons Kris Schmidt of Spokane, Washington, and Tony Schmidt, his wife Megan and two great grandchildren Rosemary and Joey, all of Yakima, Washington. Also surviving are two sisters, Gayle and husband Harvey Erickson of Moses Lake and Delphia Blumenthal of Kalispell, Montana, and many cousins, nephews and nieces and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on July 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1020 S. A Street, in Moses Lake, Washington. Mom made donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and would like us to set up a memorial for that charity. You may send or bring a check payable to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Be sure to put “Leona’s memorial” on the memo line. That way it will be routed properly.
