Camp for the unsheltered has been open for one month

MOSES LAKE — In its first month since opening, the Moses Lake Sleeping Center, a shelter for unsheltered people, has lodged 58, with an average of 15 to 20 people per night, according to city officials.

There were no concerns or complaints from guests of the shelter raised with city officials, said Lynne Lynch, a spokesperson for the city of Moses Lake, and surrounding businesses have generally responded positively to the impact the center has had.

There were some issues with conduct on-site, Lynch wrote in an email, including three guests who were trespassed from the site for a 24-hour period, one of whom was in an altercation with staff after being told they couldn’t smoke at the facility after 10 p.m. The police were called to the site once in its first month in order to de-escalate a situation with a guest, Lynch added.

Staff have connected guests of the shelter with resources to help them transition from living on the street, Lynch wrote, which has started with five people.
