Mattawa to celebrate Wahluke Community Day this month

| August 4, 2021 1:00 AM

MATTAWA — Mattawa’s town celebration will return from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at Wahluke High School with a revised name, Wahluke Community Day.

Co-organizer of the formerly called Community Days, Cheryl Douglas, said some events have been confirmed, including a car show and a parade, and some are still in the works.

The parade is scheduled for 9 a.m. Participants will line up in Hund Memorial Park, 101 Government Road. The parade route will be announced at a later date.

The parade will be followed by a community breakfast at WHS, Douglas said, starting at about 10 a.m.

Co-organizer Olga Sanchez said the WHS parking lot at 505 N. Boundary Road in Mattawa will open for car show participants at 7 a.m. The Show & Shine Car Show is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The entry fee is $20 per car, and $10 per pedal vehicle or bicycle. Individual trophies will be awarded in eight different categories, including best in show, people’s choice and superintendent’s choice. First, second and third place awards will be handed out in a number of other categories. Awards will be announced at 4 p.m.

Some other events have been confirmed, too, including a three-on-three basketball tournament, along with soccer and tennis tournaments. A salsa-making contest is planned, with entries accepted throughout the day. Douglas said prizes will be awarded for spicy salsa, sweet salsa and for the people’s choice.

Organizers are still working to add more events, Douglas said, and food and game booths will be set up on the lawn at WHS.

Organizations, businesses and individuals who want to set up a booth can contact Douglas at 509-932-4565, ext. 3052, or cdouglas@wahluke.net.

Wahluke Community Day is sponsored by the Port of Mattawa and the Wahluke School District.
