Five Quincy football players selected to Caribou Trail All League teams
QUINCY — Five Quincy High School football players were selected by coaches to the Caribou Trail League All League team for the spring season.
Quincy junior Sergio Cordova was named to both the offensive and defensive second teams as a running back and linebacker respectively. Offensive linemen senior Juan Bravo and sophomore Edwin Esparza joined Cordova on the second team.
On the defensive side, senior defensive backs Noel Hernandez and Adrian Hernandez received honorable mention.
The Jacks finished 0-4 in the North Central Region this season. Sergio Cordova led the team in rushing yards, while Noel Hernandez finished as the Jacks’ top receiver. Elijah Gonzalez led in passing yards.
While the results may not have been what the team wanted, first-year head coach Greg McMillan said he and his players learned a lot about each other this spring. He said the team made a lot of gains and built a strong foundation for the future.
McMillan said he hopes his players recognize the honor in being selected to the All League teams.
“I really appreciate the seniors because they were in a difficult position,” McMillan said. “I tried to talk to them a lot about procedures and protocols and previous seasons, those type of things, and they were really open and bought in to our way of coaching.”
McMillan said junior Sergio Cordova was the Jacks’ best player on both sides of the ball this year and credited his work ethic. He said Cordova’s leadership skills continued to improve as the season moved forward and he expects him to pick up right where he left off in the fall.
Moving toward the fall season, McMillan said he likes the group of underclassmen coming back, especially since there has been time for them to learn his new system. He said this season was a completely new experience for everyone, from administration to coaches.
Trying to instill his own system at times, but McMillan said he credits his players for handling the situation.
“They came to work every day, didn’t complain about the masks and all the protocols we’ve been through,” McMillan said. “They were just excited to be playing ball.”
He said he encouraged his players to pick up a spring sport if they could to keep up their competitive drive. McMillan said players were asking when they could hit the weight room almost as soon as the season ended.
“We’re excited to get to work in June, July and August and really hit the ground running and kind of make it a mission to make our season better than it was in the spring,” McMillan said.
