SENT/DEVELOPING:
ELECTION 2020-SEPT 11: One spent time quietly consoling families. The other proclaimed America’s might. President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden were marking the 19th anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks at memorials Friday, where their differences in style couldn’t have been more sharply on display. SENT: 950 words, photos. Will be updated.
ELECTION 2020 - QANON -CANDIDATE: The Democratic opponent to a QAnon-supporting candidate for a U.S. House seat in Georgia is dropping out of the race. Democrat Kevin Van Ausdal bowed out of the race on Friday. His campaign manager Vinny Olsziewski told The Associated Press that Van Ausdal was exiting the race for “personal and family reasons.” Greene is part of a growing list of candidates who have expressed support for QAnon, the far-right U.S. conspiracy theory popular among some supporters of President Donald Trump. SENT, developing.
ELECTION 2020 - TRUMP-HARRIS: In the 2016 race, Donald Trump barely mentioned Tim Kaine, then the Democratic vice presidential nominee. But four years later, the president has plenty to say about Kamala Harris. The racism and sexism underlying Trump’s critique of Harris come as he’s struggled to land a consistent attack against presidential candidate Joe Biden. SENT: 900 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020- THREATENED INCUMBENTS: Much of the focus in this year’s fight for House control will be on freshmen Democrats who captured Republican-held seats in 2018. But there’s a smaller category of lawmakers who also merit attention: long-term incumbents of both parties fighting to preserve their careers. SENT: 970 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020- TEXAS - MAIL VOTING: A state judge has ruled that the most populous county in Texas can move forward with plans to send all registered voters a mail-in ballot application for the November general election. Meanwhile, a federal appeals court dealt a blow to vote-by-mail advocates in Texas. A push by the state’s Democrats and some voters to allow mail balloting during the coronavirus pandemic had been upheld by a federal district judge. But a divided three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated that ruling late Thursday. SENT: 515 words.
VOTING MACHINES - GEORGIA: A federal court hearing on a challenge to Georgia’s voting machines was interrupted Friday when someone began posting video and symbols in the live Zoom session, including a swastika, images from the Sept. 11 attacks and porn. SENT: 260 words, developing.
UPCOMING:
SATURDAY:
ELECTION 2020 - TRUMP: Pushing to expand his electoral map, President Donald Trump will head west for the weekend, making a bid to establish Nevada as a battleground state while trying to silence doubts about his fundraising. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos by 12:30 a.m.
ELECTION 2020 -BIDEN-UKRAINE: Leaked recordings of apparent conversations between Joe Biden and Ukraine’s then-president show how foreign operations aimed at influencing the U.S. election are still easily reaching the social media feeds of Americans, despite efforts by Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to rein in such meddling. UPCOMING: 950 words, photos by 12:30 a.m.
ELECTION 2020 -BRINGING TROOPS HOME: President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden both say they want to pull U.S. forces out of war in the Middle East. But their approaches differ, and the outcome of the election could have long-term consequences not only for U.S. troops, but for the region. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos by 10 a.m.
SUNDAY:
ELECTION 2020 - PHILANTHROPY VOTING: With Congress unlikely to help election officials prepare for the challenges of counting votes during a pandemic, private charity is stepping into the void – most prominently with a $300 million donation from Mark Zuckerberg, who made a fortune starting a site now frequently blamed for fanning election misinformation. UPCOMING: 800 words, photos by 10 a.m.
REL -MAINLINE PROTESTANTS: During this volatile election year, there’s been plenty of controversy involving Catholics and evangelical Christians. Mainline Protestant denominations — for the most part — have not been in the political spotlight even as they stay active on key social issues. UPCOMING: 870 words, photos by 10 a.m.
MONDAY:
ELECTION 2020 - CONGRESS -VIRTUAL CAMPAIGNS: Different tactics are underway in a pandemic election year unlike any other as candidates try to win over voters in down-ballot races that will determine control of Congress. UPCOMING: 850 words, photos by 12:30 a.m.
