Trump supporters stage old-fashioned political rally

MOSES LAKE — Supporters of President Donald Trump staged a political rally through downtown Moses Lake – and on Moses Lake – Saturday.

Political rallies used to be a common feature of campaigns, more common than they are now. RaeAnne Journey, treasurer of the Grant County Republicans and one of the organizers of the Saturday event, said it was something that hadn’t been seen in Grant County during most recent presidential campaigns.

“This isn’t your typical campaign, is it?” Journey said.

Similar rallies were held across the country on Saturday, Journey said.

Participants staged a car parade through downtown before heading for the lake. Some cars and trucks (and at least one side-by-side, an off-road vehicle also legal on streets) were elaborately decorated with flags and banners as the cars drove down Third Avenue.

That was followed by a picnic at Blue Heron Park. Journey said she didn’t have an estimate on the size of the crowd, but it was at least 120 people, judging by the lunches served.

An estimated 63 boats took to the water later in the day, lined up off the Blue Heron Park dock and sailed around the lake. Some of the boats (and two personal watercraft) were decorated with large flags and banners when boaters left the dock.

“We wanted to show a positivity in our political environment,” she said. Organizers wanted to demonstrate that attendees were a politically minded, peaceful group and to attract others like them, she said.
