DESERT AIRE — A Mattawa man was seriously injured when he lost control of his vehicle, crashed and was ejected from the car in an accident near Desert Aire Oct. 15.

David Chiprez, 23, was driving at high speed down Edgewater Way when he lost control, slid off the road and hit a Grant County PUD in-ground transformer, according to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. The car, a 2002 Mercedes, rolled and Chiprez was ejected, hitting the side of a house, the press release said.

Chiprez was not wearing a seat belt.

He was airlifted to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, where he was listed in critical condition. The crash sparked a fire that was put out by crews from Grant County Fire District No. 8.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, the press release said. The accident is still under investigation.
