The Associated Press is updating its delegate count in the Democratic presidential primary to reflect party rules that make Elizabeth Warren, Mike Bloomberg and Pete Buttigieg ineligible to receive delegates based on the statewide vote in primaries and caucuses because they have quit the race.

Under Democratic Party rules, these delegates will go to Joe Biden, because he is the only candidate still actively campaigning for the party’s nomination.

Under these party rules, Bernie Sanders is also ineligible to receive statewide delegates after suspending his campaign. However, in an effort to promote party unity, the Biden campaign has agreed to allow Sanders’ supporters to fill the delegate slots Sanders would otherwise win. Because of that agreement, the AP is not adjusting Sanders’ delegate count.

The changes increase the number of Biden delegates by 40, giving him a total of 1,549 delegates. It takes 1,991 delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot at the party’s national convention.
