AP EXPLAINS-JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY: Juneteenth, considered the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States, will undoubtedly have more profound meaning as demonstrations to end systemic racism and support the Black Lives Matter movement gain traction. Originally celebrated on June 19, the holiday began when Union soldiers in 1865 told enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, that the Civil War had ended and they were free. JUNETEENTH-RELIGION-EMANCIPATION ACTIVIST DAY: Juneteenth is normally a day of fellowship, cookouts and celebrations at All People’s Church in Minneapolis. This year, in the midst of the coronavirus, emancipation day will be a day to make protest signs, draw symbols of resistance and solidarity on the sidewalk and voter registration, all with the social distancing that brings the pandemic and the outcry from the death of George Floyd beneath the knee of a police officer over a $20 crime. Other black churches will be holding their own celebrations and observances, including one livestreamed to the Galveston, Texas, chamber of commerce by one of the churches that has observed the holiday the longest, the Reedy Chapel.
