The Latest: Incumbent Edwards loses Assembly race to Black

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Latest on Nevada's primary election (all times local):

11:05 a.m.

Incumbent Assemblyman Chris Edwards has lost a Republican primary for his southern Nevada seat to Mesquite City Councilwoman Annie Black.

Results released Thursday morning show Black defeated Edwards in the Assembly District 19 race.

Black ran to the right against Edwards and accused him of being soft on tax increases.

Edwards was first elected in 2014.

The three-term assemblyman raised $17,000 in campaign contributions. Black raised $2,600.

No Democrat is running in the general election, leaving Black uncontested in November to win the seat.

Democrat Patricia Ackerman has won a seven-candidate contest in a northern Nevada congressional district.

Results released Thursday show Ackerman defeated former Obama administration official Clint Koble, former journalist Ed Cohen, retired business owner Rick Shepherd, Reynaldo Hernandez, Ian Luetkehans and Steve Schiffman in Tuesday’s primary election.

Ackerman, a retired mountaineer and former actress, will face a steep challenge in November against Republican Mark Amodei.

Amodei since 2011 has held the 2nd Congressional District, where Republicans hold a strong voter registration advantage over Democrats.

The Nevada Secretary of State is releasing more results from Tuesday's primary election, which was marked by hours-long lines that delayed initial results until early Wednesday morning.

Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske significantly reduced the number of in-person polling places for the election because of the coronavirus and instead encouraged voters to cast ballots by mail.

Though many cast ballots by mail or took advantage of two weeks of in-person early voting, many voters still showed up at the polls Tuesday, including those who said they didn't receive ballots.

The lines overwhelmed three polling places in Clark County, leading to delays of up to eight hours, and causing nearly three-hour waits at the only polling place in Washoe County.

Cegavske's office says it will release a new batch of results every day until Wednesday, June 17.

Official results will be certified and released June 19.
