Mid-Columbia Libraries add library ecard

OTHELLO — The Mid-Columbia Library has introduced a new online system that allows district patrons to check out ebooks and other material without a library card.

The “instant digital card” is free to users, according to a MCL press release.

District patrons can sign up at the MCL website, www.midcolumbialibraries.org, or download the app, known as Libby. Patrons enter a cell phone number, and once the address is verified as being within the library’s service area, can start checking out ebooks, audio books and online magazines.

The digital card is compatible with all tablets, computers and cell phones, the press release said. There are no late fees, since access to the materials automatically expires at the end of the checkout period.

The Othello MCL branch allows curbside pickup of books, but the system’s other libraries are closed, according to the MCL website. With the libraries closed, the virtual system is the only way district patrons can access library materials. Executive director and chief librarian Kyle Cox said library officials are adding to the online collection on a regular basis.

In addition to Othello, the Mid-Columbia Library system includes 11 library branches in Benton and Franklin counties.
