Applications sought for broadband grants, loans

OLYMPIA — Applications are being accepted through Sept. 9 for a Washington Department of Commerce grant program to expand broadband services in areas with limited access. The program includes about $9.1 million in low-interest loans and about $8.6 million in grant funding.

The program is open to counties and cities, port districts, public utility districts and other public entities, as well as some public-private partnerships.

Applicants for the program must meet with local internet service providers and provide documentation of ISP plans to upgrade broadband services in the project area.

The maximum award will be $2 million with a 50 percent match from the applicant. Projects in financially distressed areas can receive up to 90 percent of the total project cost, not to exceed $5 million.
