SAVANNAH, Ga. — A newborn right whale spotted off the coast of Georgia was suffering from deep cuts on either side of its head, dismaying conservationists who closely monitor the southeast U.S. coast during winter for births among the critically endangered species. The S-shaped gashes, roughly 2 feet (0.6 meters) apart, were likely inflicted by the propeller of a fishing boat or similar vessel, said Barb Zoodsma, who oversees the right whale recovery program in the U.S. Southeast for the National Marine Fisheries Service. WRONGFUL CONVICTION
DOUGLAS, Ga. — A Georgia man has been released from prison after spending more than a third of his life incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit. Kerry Robinson, 44, walked out of a South Georgia prison Wednesday after 17 years behind bars and hugged his relatives, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. SENT: 213 words.

PASADENA, Calif. — Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” is returning with new episodes, but not for another year. FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf said Thursday that star and creator Glover is making a total of 18 new episodes. COLUMBIA, S.C. — A suspended South Carolina sheriff already facing federal charges was indicted Thursday on state charges that he took money meant to pay overtime for his deputies and had officers convert his barn into a flashy man cave while they were on the clock, prosecutors said. Chester County Sheriff Alex Underwood and his chief deputy also altered travel and expense receipts for a conference they attended with their wives in Reno, Nevada, then inflated their county reimbursement by lying and saying two other officers joined them on the trip, prosecutors said. NUCLEAR WEAPONS-PLUTONIUM
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The agency that oversees the United States’ nuclear arsenal says it doesn’t need to do any broad environmental reviews of a proposal that calls for ramping up production of plutonium triggers at federal installations in New Mexico and South Carolina. The National Nuclear Security Administration on Wednesday released a supplemental analysis related to the project, saying the determination was made after reviewing extensive documentation and public comments that were received last year. PRE-KINDERGARTEN EXPANSION
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Henry McMaster wants to expand full-day pre-kindergarten for low-income 4-year-olds to every school district across South Carolina. DOTHAN, Ala. — An Alabama man accused of trying to cover up the accidental shooting death of his best friend at a house party was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison. Fisher Corbin Shipes, 20, had initially claimed an unknown black man had shot his friend, but he later admitted to the killing and pleaded guilty last year to manslaughter. Shipes is white. FATAL SHOOTING
GORDO, Ala. — Family members of a mentally ill man killed by police last year said they want answers about what happened to him. Wallace Wilder's family members, along with the Alabama NAACP, held a press conference Thursday, saying they have received little information since he was killed in August by law enforcement officers in Pickens County, and the state said they were investigating the officer-involved shooting. BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana's top higher education board on Thursday postponed decision-making on a strengthening of its minimum admission standards for public colleges that would include new financial penalties for campuses that violate the policy. Commissioner of Higher Education Kim Hunter Reed and her staff spent months working on proposed changes to existing admissions standards first put in place 14 years ago. NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana is setting rules for a barrier island that's being restored to greatly increase the number of pelicans and other seabirds that can nest there. VERMILLION SUPERINTENDENT
ABBEVILLE, La. — A Louisiana parish school district has named an interim superintendent, less than a month after a lawsuit by the former system leader was dropped. News outlets report Vermilion Parish School District board members approved Brad Prudhomme's nomination to the post this week. Prudhomme has worked for the district as supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance. He takes the place of Jerome Puyau, who served as superintendent from 2013 until his resignation in December. The Daily Advertiser reports Puyau filed a since-dropped federal lawsuit against the district in September arguing his civil rights were violated when he was suspended amid allegations of public concern about his behavior and management style. LOUISIANA HURRICANE PROTECTION STUDY
NEW ORLEANS — The federal government is reallocating $1.25 million to revise plans for a proposed south Louisiana hurricane protection project, two Republican congressmen from Louisiana said Thursday. The revision will reflect construction in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes by local and state agencies and will also allow updated and more efficient designs, said a news release from U.S. House Republican Whip Steve Scalise and Rep. CENTURYLINK-SETTLEMENT-MINNESOTA
ST. PAUL, Minn. — CenturyLink has agreed to pay nearly $9 million to settle allegations the company overbilled Minnesota customers, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said Wednesday. Ellison said the settlement requires CenturyLink to pay more than $844,000 in refunds to more than 12,000 Minnesota customers who were promised a discount they did not receive. The company will pay an additional $8 million that Ellison's office will use to distribute refunds to other customers. The settlement also requires the Louisiana-based company to change its billing practices and to disclose the true price of its services at time of sale and in its advertisements. SENT: 343 words.

Mississippi's prison system signed a 90-day contract to shift 375 inmates from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman to a nearby private lockup, saying it doesn't have the guards to safely keep the inmates in state custody in the wake of recent violence. The state and CoreCivic announced the contract Thursday, a day after it was signed. The inmates were being shifted after violence led to three deaths at Parchman and an unknown number of injuries.
