Wrestling roundup: Othello’s Perez wins Gut Check championship
KENT — Isaiah Perez only recorded one pin during his tournament run but still ended with a first-place finish at this year’s Gut Check Invitational.
Perez led a trio of Othello placers. Arturo Solorio and Elijah Roylance were both tournament runners-up at 145 and 220 pounds, respectively.
Perez pinned his opponent in the round of 16 before earning an 8-0 major decision in the quarterfinals and a 7-2 decision in the semifinals. Perez was able to outlast Blake Larsen, 6-4, in the championship round.
Solorio hunt with three-time state finalist Robby Vaughn of Chiawana before succumbing to a 9-3 loss. Roylance lost by major decision to Noah Pettigrew 14-2.
Quincy sixth at Blackhawk Invitational
CHENEY — Quincy put one wrestler at the top of the podium and placed sixth at the Blackhawk Invitational.
Ruben Vargas won the 220-pound championship, edging Cole Davis of Jenkins (Chewelah) 6-2. Jose Avila also reached the 285-pound finals but lost to Wapato’s Eduardo Mendez 15-5.
Oswaldo Perez (152) was third, Mykenzi Realme (170) took fourth, and Israel Perez (126) and Sergio Cordova (195) both placed fifth.
Mead totaled 217.5 points to win the team title; Quincy scored 126 points.
