College roundup: Big Bend women win second in a row

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend strung together its second win in a row after a rout of Blue Mountain 97-54.

The scoring output was a season high for the Vikings, who were unable to return to the postseason for a third consecutive year.

Some of the frustrations from the season were taken out on the last-place Timberwolves. All seven Vikings entered the scorebook, led by Kaitlyn Callahan’s 34 points. Callahan made seven 3-pointers and shot over 50 percent from the field.

Anna Yarbro extended her NWAC-leading rebound total with 21 to go with 17 points. Savana Stephenson, Emily Gorrell, Madi Fillmore and Xuriyah Harry all scored in double figures.

Big Bend finishes its season Wednesday with its sophomore night against Walla Walla.

Men’s basketball

Blue Mountain 83, Big Bend 78

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend men’s basketball fell to Blue Mountain 83-78, the team’s second loss in a row.

The Timberwolves led by eight at halftime and used a late 6-0 run to break a 75-75 tie in the second half.

Jonathan Thomas led the Runnin’ Vikes with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Kaeler Kahana and Landon Harrington added 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Big Bend closes the regular season Wednesday against Walla Walla.

College softball

Big Bend 16-13, Olympic 2-10

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend softball opened the 2020 season with a doubleheader sweep of Olympic 16-2, 13-10.

The Vikings scored seven runs in the opening frame of Game 1 to build a comfortable lead for starting pitcher Ally Rook. Rook allowed two runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out four.

Big Bend pounded out four home runs, two by Gates Leatherwood. Riley Newbold and Marleigh Horrocks also left the yard. The Vikings had five players drive in two or more runs.

Big Bend scored eight runs in the fourth inning to rally from a 7-4 deficit in Game 2. Leatherwood homered again and had two RBIs.

College softball

Big Bend starts 0-4

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend lost the first four games of its season to Spokane.

The Vikings were swept on Saturday 16-2, 14-6. Spokane continued the offensive barrage Sunday, winning both games 31-3 and 6-2.

Warden graduate Wade Visker drove in two runs during the first game on Sunday. Moses Lake graduate Zach Valdez doubled home a run during Sunday’s nightcap.
