BC-Tuesday Spotlight, ADVISORY
EDITORS:
The following story will move Monday as this week's Tuesday Spotlight, a feature showcasing the best off-the-news enterprise in the AP report:
NONCITIZEN VOTING — An embarrassing mistake in Illinois’ automatic voter registration system could mean deportation, criminal charges or both for a handful of people who cast recent ballots. Hundreds of people who said they weren’t U.S. citizens were mistakenly registered. Roughly a dozen cast ballots, and so far, election officials have confirmed at least one wasn’t a citizen. The fiasco has triggered a partisan battle, infuriated voter advocacy groups and left immigrant rights activists in damage control mode for people whose lives may be altered. Such was the case for Margarita Del Pilar Fitzpatrick, a Peruvian citizen deported in 2017 after mistakenly voting. By Sophia Tareen. UPCOMING: 1,100 words, photos.
