ELECTION 2020-APP: The little-known technology start-up under scrutiny after the meltdown at Iowa with Democratic Party caucus meltdown was founded little more than a year ago by veterans of Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign. Shadow Inc. was picked in secret by state party leaders to develop the phone app used to gather and tabulate the caucus results. The seed money for Shadow Inc. came from ACRONYM, a progressive media non-profit corporation founded by Tara McGowan, a Washington, D.C., political strategist who runs several companies aimed at promoting Democratic candidates and priorities. She is married to a senior strategist for Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, which records show has paid Shadow Inc. $42,500 for software. Those connections are feeding online conspiracy theories among some Democrats that something was fishy with the app that had problems in Iowa — ill feelings the Trump camp is looking to stoke. ELECTION 2020-IOWA MELTDOWN: What went wrong with the Iowa Democratic Party’s high-tech plan to speed up the reporting of results of the caucuses? Pretty much everything. A little-known startup company was picked by party leaders in secret to develop the technology. Organizers across the state had little training on how to download the app and get past its security measures — let alone practice reporting the results. Error messages greeted some who were able to log in. For those who did report the results through the app, an unspecified “coding issue” led the software to report out only partial results, party officials said. Those who were unable or unwilling to use the app tried to phone in their results and overwhelmed a state party apparently unprepared to handle the crush of calls. “If I were prone to Twitter,” says University of Iowa computer science professor Douglas W. Jones, an election security expert, “I would use the hashtag #IToldYouSo.” By Alexandra Jaffe and Christina A. Cassidy. SENT: 1200 words, photos.
