US market indexes open lower as traders wait on virus aid

| December 10, 2020 7:09 AM

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are off to a weak start on Wall Street as traders absorb more bad news on the economy and watch as talks in Washington remain stuck over providing more relief to people, businesses and local governments battered by the coronavirus pandemic. The S&P 500 slipped 0.8% in the early going Thursday, easing further below the record high it set on Tuesday. The government reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week to 853,000, the most since September. It’s the latest signal that companies are cutting more jobs as new virus cases rise.
