DENVER — After being thrown into a chokehold by police in suburban Denver and threatened with a dog and stun gun, Elijah McClain was subjected to another law enforcement tool before his death a year ago: A powerful sedative used to calm people down. The safety and efficacy of that drug is under increased scrutiny amid a national reexamination of law enforcement policies and police brutality, including a review of its role in McClain’s death by Colorado health officials. An analysis by The Associated Press reveals a lack of training, protocols and conflicting medical standards about a drug widely used by police.
