Contract awarded for Grant County landfill expansion

EPHRATA — Grant County commissioners have voted to award a $2.5 million contract to KRCI, a construction company based in East Wenatchee, to open a new section of the Grant County landfill.

Grant County Public Works director Sam Castro said Monday that the contact is still awaiting the company’s signature. Once that’s done, the contractor and county officials will meet to determine a start date.

“I want to get started right away,” Castro said.

The goal is to have the project completed by the end of November, he said.

The construction will prepare the third of four sections at the landfill, called cells. The first cell is full and no longer in use, and the second cell should be full within two to three years. County officials decided to start work on the third cell, since preparing it is an intricate process.

The bottom must be lined to prevent any hazardous materials from leaking, Castro said, and there must be a collection and disposal system for methane gas produced by the garbage.

The third cell will go into use as soon as it’s finished.
