DA: Deputies were justified in shooting man during standoff

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Washoe County district attorney has concluded that sheriff's deputies were justified in shooting a Lemmon Valley man who pointed what appeared to be a gun at them during a 2018 standoff at his home.

A report released Thursday by District Attorney Chris Hicks says Maurice Alfonso Garcia was actually holding a pellet pistol when four deputies opened fire.

Garcia was seriously wounded but survived. He was recently convicted of charges including battery with the use of a deadly weapon and battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm.

According to sheriff's officials, Garcia stabbed his sister and her friend during an altercation after he drank heavily at a Super Bowl party.
