Adams County offers relief on property taxes

RITZVILLE — Adams County Treasurer’s Office announced on Monday, April 6, that property owners who are directly impacted by COVID-19 will be able to get some relief.

Treasurer Kayla Meise is implementing a program to forgive interest and late penalties for those who cannot make their property tax payment by April 30. Participants in the program must be able to demonstrate how they have been financially impacted by COVID-19.

The collection of property taxes is important to local government entities, such as schools, fire departments, hospitals and law enforcement to pay for services. Another use of the money is to make payments on voter-approved bonds.

“Adams County property taxes are due April 30. A delay in the collection of property taxes may have devastating results for many junior taxing districts in this time of crisis,” Meise said in a press release. “It is critical that the county and junior taxing districts continue to receive the revenue they depend on for making debt payments, paying bills and ensuring continuity of service for the public.”

While the doors to the treasurer’s office are not open, staff can be reached via phone, mail and internet. Property tax payments can be made online and over the phone. Charges for credit cards and electronic checks will apply. Checks and money orders can be deposited into drop boxes outside the Ritzville City Hall and Adams County Public Services building in Othello.

The Adams County Treasurer’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and can be reached at (509) 659-3227.
